Jilin Province has a varied landscape, generally sloping towards the northwest. With the Daheishan Mountain Range in the middle, the province is divided into two topographic regions: the mountainous area in the east and the plains of the midwest. The former is further divided into the Changbaishan Mountains and their foothills; and the latter can be divided into high plains in the middle, and grassy marshlands, lakes, ponds, and wet sandy soils in the west. The topography is composed of volcanic, eroded, flooded and alluvial-plain landforms. The main mountain chains include the Daheishan Mountains , the Zhangguangcailing Range , the Jilinhadaling Range , Laoling Range , etc. A watershed divides the plains. The Songnen Plain is in the north and the Liaohe Plain is in the south. The main forces in forming Jilin 's topography have been glaciers, running water, wind, and other climatic and meteorological factors. In the Changbaishan Mountains the remains of a glacier from the Fourth Ice Age can still be found . Erosion from running water impacts the general configuration of this area. The mountainous and hilly areas, high plains, plains, basins, and valleys have been acted on by various factors like erosion, siltation etc., creating various formations such as wash lands, alluvial plains, gulches, etc. Various factors have helped to form the sandy lands in the west of the Songliao Plain. Volcanic landforms account for 8.6% of the total area of the province, fluvial for 83.5%, lacustrine for 2.6%, while Aeolian landforms account for 5.2%.
