The Mist of the Changbaishan Mountains

The frost season arrives early in the eastern mountainous area but late in the West. Early frost comes in late August and early September around the Heavenly Lake area while in the plains it comes in late September. The latest frost is in the late days of April in the western plain. But the latest frost comes in early May in the central and eastern parts of the province. Usually the annual frost period lasts between 6¡ª9 months, 7 months in the western plain, and 7¡ª 8 in the central part but over 8 months in the Changbaishan Mountainous area. The frost-free period usually lasts for 100¡ª160 days. The freezing period of the province is relatively long, usually beginning in late October and ending in late April. But in the mountains the freezing period can last until May or even mid-June. The freezing period of the province can be 6 to 8 months, long in the mountains, short in the plain, long in the north but short in the south.

For many years the province's average amount of sunshine has remained between 2,259¡ª3,016 hours, long in summer, short in winter, more in the west and less in the east. The average annual precipitation stays between 400 and 600 millimeters. But it varies greatly from season to season and from area to area. 80% of the rainfall comes in summer and the greatest volume is in the east. If the climate is normal, the amount of light, warmth, and water are enough to meet the needs for growing crops.

Climate varies greatly from place to place in the province. The humid climate in the southeast shifts to semi-humid climate and semi-dry climate in the northwest. The temperature varies obviously from area to area and season to season in terms of temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind and meteorological extremes.
